The Interurban Center for the Arts (ICA) was established in 1984 and provides elementary aged students with an arts enrichment and development curriculum. The ICA helps schools and parent volunteers facilitate monthly art appreciation classes which meet and exceed OSPI Visual Arts Requirements. The ICA believes art is so vital to building a child's self confidence. Art helps to develop students problem solving skills and nurtures creative thinking. The ICA works to serve all elementary schools in South King and Pierce counties equitably while supporting parent volunteers and students in their creative educational explorations.

NOTE: The Westwood Elementary Parent Teacher Organization pays for and manages supply donations for the program (doesn't come out of the teacher's classroom budgets) and enrolls in the program. They also manage the volunteers that bring this opportunity to partner in our classrooms at Westwood Elementary!

Training

September was a whirlwind of getting the year started with all off our students! October we would love to get this program rolling in our classrooms. While we do have a small handful of volunteers, we need more! This is an amazing opportunity to get training, get into the classroom and work with students to create memories and help them develop an appreciation for the arts.

In order to go into the classrooms, volunteers HAVE to attend a training. To make it easier for everyone, they just launched an online basic training that can be taken when it is convenient for you!

What Do We Need From You?

At Westwood, a group parent volunteers, along with the Parent Teacher Organization, have enrolled in the Art Docent Program. This gets us access to their materials, training and online lesson plans. Some teachers were  lucky enough to be able to have some of our amazing voluneers come into their classrooms at the end of last year to "test" out the program. Things went really well, we learned a lot about art, artists and how to better support the students and staff  while sharing an appreciation for the arts.

PARENTS: We are asking for at least two parent volunteers per grade level (or one per class!) to take the training and work with lead volunteers to bring these lesson plans to the classrooms monthly. Dates and times would be coordinated with each individual teacher to make sure it fits into their lessons and schedules.

TEACHERS: Do you have an active volunteer already working in your room that would be willing to help with the program? Can you help spread the word in your newsletters?
